Cris Cristofaro

Artist Statement
The blank canvas is to me a construction site, a platform or stage to build my composition. I use geometric and amorphic forms, which are not standard for minimalism. I consider the shapes and forms I use as sculptural elements that are affected by the same forces as traditional sculptural materials, like cause and effect and gravitational pull. I often stack the forms, using them like pedestals or bricks.

I use line-like lengths of lumber, nailing shapes onto it. The line will also separate and define the space. This can cause a spatial reversal, which will flip the forms from the negative to the positive. They also have a real sense of stability while, at the same time, instability, as the shapes can be tumbling and falling. I use a palette of only three or four flat warm colors, allowing the surface to absorb the light. Minimalism can often be cold; I like using warm colors to make the work more inviting to the viewer.
